5 Ways to Stay Motivated When You Work For Yourself
Whether you work yourself from home or you work remotely, sometimes, it can be really easy to lose focus and excitement that you once had when you decided to take the plunge and be your own boss.
One of the many things that I have never shared online was, I actually started my first online business was when I was at the age of 16 (almost a decade now) and since then I have tried so many different methods to stay motivated.
Over the years of constant trial-and-error, below are some of the foolproof ways that I would love to share with you to help you stay motivated too.
1 | Workout
Do you know that it is scientifically proven that when you workout, your body releases a chemical called endorphins? Endorphins not only trigger a positive feeling but also help you to release stress and stay focused throughout your day.
Now one thing I would say is to choose a workout that you enjoy. If you know you don’t enjoy running, ditch running!
For example, I really dislike running but I love HIIT workouts but because of my ACL injury two years back, I swapped my high-intensity workouts to low impact training and spin classes instead which I still enjoy very much.
At the end of the day, choose workouts that you enjoy. If yoga is the one, yoga it is. When you choose a workout you enjoy, you will look forward to it more as opposed to dreading it.
Action Step: Plan workouts that you enjoy and schedule your sessions into your calendar.
2 | Dress for Success
It is comfortable and indeed a luxury to many people that you get to work from home in your favorite sweater and yoga pants with no makeup, right? Don’t worry, you are not the only one because I sometimes still do!
Even as I am writing this blog post, I am literally dressed in my tank top and denim shorts because in all honesty? I simply don’t feel like dressing up today as it that time of the month if you know what I mean.
Okay, before you slam me for contradicting myself. I have to say that I do dress up on most days. Because there is just something so magical when you are put together from head to toe.
Granted there are going to be days when you absolutely don’t feel like dressing up or perhaps you don’t see a need to. But when you take the time to dress for work, psychologically you are telling your brain that it is time to get shit done.
Action Step: Pick out your favourite outfit (one that makes you feel totally empowered) the night before. The next morning, put on makeup and get ready for the day. Give it a go and watch the magic unfolds!
3 | Design an Inspiring Workspace
One of the many advantages, when you work for yourself, is you get to design your own workspace! Bid goodbye to the boring corporate desk and ugly ergonomic chair.
But working from home also means that the line between your home and your workspace can be easily crossed, which is not cool for your own well-being in the long run.
Action Step: Designate a space in your home or even better (if this option is available to you), create a separate room as your home office. If you are working remotely like I am currently, have your personal favourite knick-knacks on your desk. It could be a mini faux planter, candle, crystals etc.

4 | Know Your Why
Setting goals and knowing what your big vision is will help you stay focused and motivated. It is as simple as that. When you know what you are striving towards to, you will wake up each morning with a stronger sense of purpose.
Say one of your ultimate goals is to launch an online business. The first thing you need to do is to ask yourself why.
Why do you want to start an online business? Is it because you want to monetize your passion or perhaps you want to do something that gives you a huge fulfillment.
Whatever it is, your “why” will be your ongoing motivation to keep you moving forward in the long run.
Action Step: Ask yourself what are the 3 ultimate goals you want to achieve this year? Then breakdown each goal into smaller actionable steps so that it seems less overwhelming and much more achievable.
5 | Celebrate Small Wins Along The Way
One of the biggest lessons I learned from my business in 2018 was to celebrate my achievements, regardless of big or small.
Setting big goals is great because it pushes you outside of your comfort zone and who doesn’t love a good ol’ challenge! But learning how to acknowledge (and celebrate) your small achievements is equally important too.
Say you are a photographer and one of your big goals is to generate $100,000 in a year. Celebrate every single sale that comes your way! This will give you that steady boost of motivation as you progress towards your big goal.
It really does not matter whether you booked a project for $250 or $1,000 – give yourself a pat on your shoulder and celebrate regardless!
It can be booking yourself a 90-minute body massage or have a glass of your favorite red wine and simply wine down in the evening. Ha, get it? Wind down. Wine Down.
Whatever that you decide on, choose something makes you happy. And it does not even have to be something you pay for, it can also simply be sending a voice message to your business bestie.
Action Step: Take the time to breakdown your big goal into smaller milestones and decide how are you going to celebrate the small wins.
